When I first started taking Truvada PrEP, I had a lot of questions about safety precautions and other potential side effects caused by the drug. One question that I struggled to find a lot of information on was:
Can I drink alcohol while taking Truvada PrEP?
According to quite a few sources, Truvada does not directly interact with alcohol. Yes, you can drink while being prescribed to Truvada PrEP.
However, there are some things you should know.
1. ALWAYS talk to your doctor first.
Even though it is technically ‘safe’ to take Truvada PrEP and drink later, it may not be safe specifically for you. Always consult with your doctor first to ensure you don’t take any other medications that may interact with the combination of Truvada PrEP and alcohol.
Truvada can have serious side effects when mixed with alcohol if you have liver disease or a history of alcohol abuse. Please be sure to discuss this with your doctor first to make sure you can safely take Truvada PrEP.
2. Alcohol may increase your risk of developing certain side effects.
Side effects like nausea, vomiting, and headaches may be especially common if you drink before or after taking Truvada PrEP. If you notice any severe or unusual side effects like trouble breathing, fast/irregular heart beat, or yellow skin/eyes, contact your doctor immediately.
3. Be safe and protect yourself.
PrEP does not protect you from other STDs and STIs. Always use protection and practice safe sex. Condoms are the only tool that protect you from both HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.
